Over the years, Samsung has offered a sleek desktop experience as a standard feature in many of its phones and tablets. It’s called Samsung DeX, and it has eliminated my need for another PC. Here are some of my favorite ways I’ve incorporated DeX into my life.
1 Connecting to AR Glasses for Work and Play
AR glasses come in a variety of styles. You can still think of Google Glass back in the day, which expanded your view of the world with a small screen.
My favorite AR glasses act as external monitors. They feel like they’re walking with your personal projector, giving you a bigger display than large monitors or TVs.
I have XREAL Air 2 Pro glasses, which I put in my Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. DeX looks like it lets me do whatever I want on the main screen. I work professionally like this. I also watch movies. When I pair a Bluetooth controller and download NVIDIA GeForceNOW, Samsung DeX becomes part of my hybrid gaming experience.
2 Having a Desktop PC When I Need One
I have only owned one computer in my life, and that was before I graduated high school. My first computer was a laptop. My PC in college was a laptop. Most of my computers since then have been laptops.
With DeX, sometimes it feels like I have a computer again. All I have to do is connect the port to an external monitor and pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. When I drop my phone into the dock, the full DeX desktop appears. There are issues with how some apps adapt to the big screen, but for the most part, it feels like I have a fast and capable computer.
The same is true when I need a laptop. Instead of fiddling with multiple devices, I just plug my phone into the lapdock. Even the string is optional. Since my lapdock is wireless, I can use DeX without any cables, although the experience isn’t smooth or reliable when I go that route. However, considering how it feels like using a normal laptop, sometimes the lowers are necessary.
3 Throwing it on the Lapdock for My Kids to See
DeX’s wireless connection isn’t great for gaming, but it’s great for movies. Most TV shows and movies are not recorded at 60 frames per second. This means that the 30Hz limit for wireless connections compared to 60Hz for wired connections is not recognized.
When my kids want to watch a show, it’s easy for me to open my bag, put it in the tent, and start DeX wirelessly. Then, I can open Netflix, Disney +, or any other streaming app.
Wireless connectivity means that my phone is freed up to continue using anything else. Also, I’m more comfortable with my kids next to a lapdock than a full laptop. It is not very expensive to replace if it is broken, and the chance of it breaking is very low to begin with.
4 Stream My Shows on Someone’s TV
My parents love watching movies, and it’s one of the things we do when we get together. When it’s my turn to choose the movie, I usually pull out my phone and connect to their TV using DeX. This is possible because wireless DeX works with any TV compatible with Miracast, such as their TCL Roku TV. Communication is generally reliable throughout the movie, perhaps in part because I don’t interact with the phone very much.
If the connection is a problem, or the TV does not support Miracast, it is not a problem. I can still install DeX on the TV as long as I remember to bring my USB hub, which allows me to connect my phone to an HDMI cable. This is the most reliable method. The disadvantage of this method is that my phone is not accessible to use during the movie because it is attached to the side or back of the TV.
5 Turning My Phone Into a Couch Game Console
I have already mentioned how I play games using AR glasses. This is my favorite way to play, but it’s not the only one. Sometimes I connect my phone to a portable monitor that is placed on the coffee table and create a game console that I can play in bed.
I usually walk this way when I play games that my kids want to watch. For example, I am currently walking across the Sea of ​​Stars. So far it’s been a good story, appealing to kids, but I can only see it when I use the AR glasses. Sometimes I drop my phone in the dock and walk around with it, but a portable monitor is great if multiple people are trying to see.
6 Having «TVs» Available in Most Rooms
I’m not a TV personality. We don’t have a TV anywhere in our house. We use our phones, tablets, or laptops for a long time whenever we want to watch something many times. However, portable projectors have been a great way for my wife and I to watch shows together.
Some portable monitors are inexpensive. I grabbed a few on Amazon for $60 each. I keep one in our bedroom. The others I keep in the office next to our living room. If we want to watch something in the living room or the kitchen table, or if we want to cuddle with a movie at night in bed, there is a monitor nearby.
Once the show is done, I can stop the project. I like to have a screen that is visible without having to be in a position where it is visible at home.
Mobile monitors aren’t as big as desktop or TV monitors, but they don’t matter when you’re close to the screen. There are also large ones like 22 inches, which are larger than normal laptop screens.
I don’t even see DeX mentioned in reviews, but it’s the main reason I decided to buy a Samsung phone. In the US, Motorola is the only company that offers a desktop model, but it is not as mature as Samsung’s offering. However, for most of the things I’ve written about, the Motorola brand is the best. Instead of booting to the desktop, Motorola asks you if you want to go to an app or a game instead.
So, if you are not a fan of Samsung devices, you are in luck. Hopefully, more people and more Android phone developers can discover how exciting having an Android desktop in your pocket can be.
